Stamp Out Hunger – Sat. May 9th

May 8, 2009 by Webmaster · Comments Off

I Support Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive — May 9th, 2009

The SCV Food Pantry is asking local residents to help eliminate hunger by participating in the nation’s largest single-day food drive Saturday.

Donors can leave a sturdy bag of non-perishable foods such as canned soup, canned vegetables or meat, peanut butter, pasta, rice or cereal next to their mailboxes prior to the time of regular mail delivery on Saturday. Food items should be in non-breakable containers such as boxes and cans. Local letter carriers will collect donations and deliver them to the Santa Clarita Valley Food Pantry.

“In these difficult economic times, hunger is an issue that must be addressed in every community across our country,” said William H. Young, president of the National Association of Letter Carriers. “We see it daily on our routes. That’s why now more than ever before, we need everybody’s help to make a real difference.”

SCV Food Pantry Executive Director Belinda Crawford said all food collected in the Santa Clarita Valley will stay in the valley. “This food that’s collected helps the food pantry through the most difficult two months out of the year,” Crawford said. “Summer months are the months (that) donations are the lowest and the need is the highest.”

Kids on summer break lose the benefit of the National School Lunch Program and must eat at home over summer. That puts a stretch on the budget of lower-income families, she said.

Last year, the pantry collected 26 tons of food through the drive, Crawford said.

“At the SCV Food Pantry we distribute about a ton each day,” she said.

The pantry saw a 48-percent increase in families requesting services in the first quarter of 2009 compared to the first quarter of 2008.

“There are a lot of hurting families out there right now,” she said.

More than 36 million Americans live in food-insecure households and approximately one in every three of these Americans is a child, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The Santa Clarita Valley Food Pantry distributed food to more than 5,500 individuals in 2008 – half of them were children, according to a pantry press release.

May Roundtable for the Bill Hart District will be on Thursday, May 7, 7:30 PM, at the LDS building on the corner of Bouquet Canyon and Centurion Way.

Come early to sign in and have a chance to chat with fellow scouters before it starts. That way you won’t miss anything at the beginning. Leaders for Cubs, Boy Scouts, Varsity, and Venturing will meet in the gym promptly at 7:30 for the opening and announcements that apply to all scouting age groups. If you have an item you would like to announce or have announced, please call Chuck Byers at 661-645-1013.

At 7:45 the breakout sessions will begin with the following featured themes:

  • The Scoutmasters session will focus on camping – the “outing” in scouting The Varsity/venture leaders breakout is primarily attended by the LDS leaders of programs for boys 14 and older, but all leaders of this age group are welcome and encouraged to bring their experience into the session.
  • A one-time session for LDS leaders in the 11 year-old scout program will feature Larry Amelang giving specific training and guidance drawing on his long experience as a scouter, specifically with the 11 year-olds.

The breakout sessions will end anywhere from 8:30 to 8:45 followed by an informal crackerbarrel get-together. Please come for the information and network with fellow scouters. The goal of your Roundtable staff is to help you become a more effective leader.

Jamboree Information

2010 National Scout Jamboree

Ft. A.P. Hill, Virginia

July 26 – August 4, 2010 plus pre-jamboree tour

UPDATE 12/09/2008

Here is the latest Jamboree information from WLACC. This document contains all the tour information as well. Download the Brochure

Reserve your spot now with the Western Los Angeles County Council Contingent! WLACC will be sending a contingent of 164 scouts and 20 leaders to celebrate BSA largest birthday party.

What is Jamboree? This is a get-together of more than 35,000 scouts for amazing and fun activities, getting to meet and know other scouts from all over the USA and even other countries, participate in dynamite arena shows (maybe even the President will visit), having fun while experiencing the true brotherhood spirit of scouting. National Jamborees occur once every 4 years — this one has been delayed by a year to 2010 so it coincides with our 100th anniversary.

Who can go? Scouts who are at least 12 but not older than 18 and at least First Class rank at the time of Jamboree who are registered and active in their troops, have been interviewed and selected to represent our council, participated in the pre-jamboree meetings, paid their own way and agreed to the Code of Conduct. Since we are limited to sending 164 scouts from our council, signing up now is important! Complete the pre-registration form, and get it into our council office with your $200 (refundable) deposit to be included in the early interview and selection process. Scouts from many troops in our council are assigned to one of the 5 contingent troops, formed just for the purpose of going to Jamboree. Each contingent troop elects its Senior Patrol Leader, Patrol leaders and other leaders.

Cost is yet to be determined, and will be a function of the jamboree fees, and travel dates and arrangements. We are estimating the cost to be between $3100 and $5200, depending on the length and location of the pre and post jamboree tours.

Tours Pre and post jamboree tours are being planned. Each contingent troop will attend the jamboree, and each troop visit some fun and very exciting places on the way to or from the jamboree. Some of the tours will include visits to Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Gettysburg, Amish country, Baltimore, Washington DC, Norfolk, Fredericksburg, Cape Canaveral, and even a Disney Cruise! Tour details will be released very shortly.

How do I sign up?

Complete the preregistration form and send in a $200 refundable deposit. Priority Reservation is based upon date deposit received. Participation is also pending on your selection by the national scout jamboree selection committee and your completion of the jamboree application and code of conduct.

Don’t wait to sign up. Assignment to Jamboree troops will be done on a first-come, first-served basis. Don’t miss this once in a lifetime experience.
