Community comes to aid of family that helped Metrolink crash workers

It’s a tragedy when any family loses its home to fire, but what happened to the Salay family during the Sesnon blaze last week just makes you shake your head and wonder about fairness in life.

The night of the Sept. 12 Metrolink crash, the Salays, like a lot of families, were home watching the tragic scene unfold on TV.

But Les and his wife, Melissa – both deeply involved with their kids in Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts – decided to do more than just watch. They put on their uniforms from Boy Scout Troop 921 in Northridge and spent more than 12 hours at the scene, handing out food and water to firefighters and police officers, then went to Chatsworth High School to help comfort anxious relatives of crash victims gathered at the evacuation center.

A month later, their house on Clymer Street in Northridge – almost seven miles from the Sesnon Fire – burned. It was the only house on the street to catch fire.

The Bill Hart District completed the first leg of the 2008 Popcorn Campaign on Saturday with the successful completion of the Show and Sell segment. Once again our units did an outstanding job. We have exceeded last years Show and Sell sales by $39,275 (14.4%). Additionally, our District Take Order sales have also exceeded last years totals by $7,335 (10%). Our total sales for 2008 currently stand at $345,115.

Congratulations to all of our units and boys for their outstanding performance this year. The Bill Hart District continues to amaze people on how well we deliver popcorn to the community. Also our sincere thanks to the many adult leaders who coordinated, assisted and tackled the paperwork aspect of this years campaign. Read more

Open House Troop 48 Canyon Country

October 19, 2008 by Webmaster · Comments Off

On Monday, October 27th Troop 48 will hold an open house for Webelos interested in learning more about the Scouting experience. Our meetings are held at First Christian Church of Canyon Country, 27421 Homyr Place (caddy corner from the movie theatres on Solidad Canyon behind the Baskin Robins), begin at 7:00 PM and end by 8:15 PM. The evening will include a traditional openning with flag ceremony, a first aid presentation with a bit of a Halloween bent, a slide show of some of our recent activities and refreshments. This will be a great opportunity for Webelos to meet the members of Troop 48 before attending our overnight and to see Scouting in action. Webelos are welcome even if they are not attending our overnight.

Hope to see you there.

Yours in Scouting,

Bob Gaby

A Scout family in great need!

October 16, 2008 by Webmaster · Comments Off

Bill Hart Scouters, please take a moment to read and help if you can. Please keep his family in your prayers.

To All in Scouting

I spoke with Les Salay tonight. He handles one of our Scout info email lists and is a dedicated Scouter and proponent of Scouting. His house and everything he owns has burnt down in the recent fire.

Les and his family were one of the first to respond to the Metro Rail train crash a few weeks ago. It’s time to return the good deeds to him and his family. They currently are living in a motel and have only the clothes on their backs. If you and/or your Scouting Unit would like to assist a fellow Scout family read below in his email as to their needs.

If you wish to donate clothes, call him first to coordinate what to get so items are not duplicated. If you wish to help with a financial donation you can mail to him at the address below. I would think the latter would be the best for the family.

As Scouters we come together so often for the community we often don’t even know. Now it’s time to come to the aid of someone we do. Please forward this on to anyone you think may be of help or may be interested. Nice to see with everything that has happened he still keeps his humor and faith………….thanks for your help………paul

Leaders of Character Recognition Dinner 2008

On Saturday, September 27th our District held the 3rd Annual Leaders of Character Recognition Dinner. It was a great success, and although the final numbers have not been calculated, we think that we are going to net $50,000. A big reason why this year’s event did so well is because our units stepped up and supported the event. The following units donated gift baskets for the virtual auction P48 (2); P496 (2); T51; T2222 (3) and T583 donated two shotgun baskets for the Live Auction.

Over 30 Scouts from the District represented us proudly during the flag presentation, pledge of allegiance, Scout Oath, Scout Law and as auction runners during the night. Also we want to recognize several key adult leaders who made the event possible.

  • Arif Halaby (T2222) – Committee Chairman and Event Emcee
  • Mark Murphy (T119) – Committee Member and Script Development
  • Gina Thompson and her fantastic team (P,T and C 119) – Registration
  • Marty Kasman (T2) and Kim Crookstien – Floor Coordinators
  • Jeff Prata (T303)– Audio Visual
  • Terry Duffy (Committee Member)– Auction Coordination and Script Development

Popcorn

We continue to set the bar higher than anyone could imagine. To date we have placed $333,170 in Show and Sell orders. To give you a little perspective, we are currently $100,000 above our 2007 TOTAL sales. The Council office has been getting additional popcorn to the units, who need more, but we are still having difficulty in getting them to push extra popcorn for us to store up here, Terry continues to work on that problem. We are on target to reach our goal of $400,000 in popcorn sales for 2008.

Recruiting

Fall recruiting is underway! Flyers and support items can be obtained through Council. For additional support that your unit requires please contact our DE, David Kline Director of Field Services WLACC at dkline@bsa-la.org or 818. 933.0106.

Online Charter Renewal

2008 Charter Renewal will be done 100% through the online process. Training is being provided by Council and District level. Mr. Bill Crowl has walked units through the requirements for a successful Online Charter Renewal process at this months Roundtable. Thank You Bill!

Santa Clarita Service Center

Our service center will remain open through the end of the calendar year. Our new Scout Executive Jim Rushton has assured me that based our on Popcorn, LOC and FOS for 2008 we should have no problem keeping our offices open. We are also in the process of forming a steering committee to work with the WLACC to provide oversight on the center. More to follow and if you have any suggestions please forward to my attention at gilwellbear@hotmail.com

Camporee 2009

We are currently looking for a Camporee Chair for next years event. If there is anyone interested please contact me at gilwellbear@hotmail.com

If we can not find a Chair person within the next two-three weeks we maybe force to cancel this event.
